"Through Magic and Mayhem" is S D Pixley's debut novel of fantasy and adventure. This first book in the planned Waker World Adventure series introduces us to a world of magic hidden within our own. In this world, most of us are Asleep and unable to see and work with the magic that flows through the world. However, as two young women, Eka and Christelle, soon discover, there are also magic users known as the Awake or Wakers.

Eka is an adventurous, wandering soul driving her camper from gig to gig, when she runs into odd weather and wrecks her truck. Luckily, her grandmother has an old family friend in the area with whom she can stay, until she can get her vehicle repaired and get back on the road. Her grandmother's quirky friend has a granddaughter, Christelle, about the same age as Eka, and she happens to be staying with her for awhile. Christelle has grown up helping her father manage a circus, in which she also occasionally performed.

The women begin to bond when their worlds get turned upside-down as they discover and try to navigate a hidden world of magic, heal from the hurt and shock of newly revealed family secrets, overcome Waker bigotry, and investigate a series of murders. These two women have more in common than wandering lifestyles, but personal insecurities, differences between their personalities, strained family dynamics, and community suspicions test their growing friendship.

Overall, I enjoyed this novel and found the plot engaging and the characters interesting and well-developed. I think this story might appeal to readers of young adult fantasy, as the two young women were learning about themselves, trying to figure out their places in the world, and beginning to develop more mature relationships with their families.

However, I should mention that there were a few typos and some definite problems with comma usage or lack thereof. This shiny new author also has a few bugs to work out with her use of "then" as a crutch word in describing the sequence of events. A little editing and polishing would make this a real stand-out offering. I look forward to the next installment.
