I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would based on the premise. When it first came out I chose not to read it because it didn't sound interesting to me. But I've changed my mind. It turns out that Jake is a sympathetic character, a boy who's had to grow up faster than most kids because of his single mother's personal struggles. When his mother gets injured, Jake is faced with changes in his universe, the most significant of which is the arrival of the grandfather he doesn't know. I liked the theme of accepting people by learning to see their good traits, even if you can find only one at first. This would make a thoughtful read-a-loud. Recommended.

Read this at night to my 8yo Jake and his 6 yo brother. When we finished, the 6 yo said, "well, I guess we can put that one in the give away pile". He was right. It was an ok story with little to no excitement to keep us turning the pages. The attempt to bond Jake and Granddad was so stretched and even then barely happened on the last page. It was ok, but save your $$ and borrow it from the library.
i thought this book was going to be about winter. i was wrong. you should read this book. its not what you would think it would be
This is a good book. I like how they go back and forth from the hospital and home. I also really like the dog, Max, in the story.
My granddaughters enjoyed this book. I would recommend it to any young reader. I would probably order other books by this same author.
Encouraging story on how to turn what some may consider tough obstacles into a positive outcome. Great book for all but especially for older elementary through pre-teens.

Awesome book. Used it for a book study in my 6th grade remedial reading class and the students all loved the story.
