"Blessed is the season which engages the whole world in a conspiracy of love." ~Hamilton W. Mabie (1845-1916)
Sir Sebastian Hadley-Attwater, distinguished explorer, adventurer and author had traveled the globe enjoying one exhilarating escapade after another, and now, after 12 long years abroad, his wandering ways had finally brought him home to England for a Christmas visit. Or so everyone thought.
Even though quite successful in his own right, it seems Sebastian sees himself as sort of the `black sheep' of the very proper Hadley-Attwaters; and little do they know, he greatly desires to be regarded as worthy and responsible by his family. So he's decided the likeliest way to gain their approval and respect would by returning home, and preparing to settle down and raise a family as any proper society gentleman would.
And intelligent man that he is, he's devised plan to achieve his goals;
Return home successful with an appropriate fortune - Check.
Buy a large, comfortable country home - Check.
Hire a suitable staff to run it - Check.
Acquire a proper wife - Check???
Hmm... Not quite yet... but Sebastian has his sights set on the eminently respectable, and dazzlingly lovely and sharp-witted widow, Lady Veronica Smithson ~ an excellent choice for a wife and one that his very proper family is sure to approve. Beyond that, he's a man who knows what he wants and he's absolutely certain she's the one for him ~ the woman who will change his life ~ and he plans to marry her by Christmas. It's a brilliant strategy he's come up with, but it's too bad Veronica's the one person Sebastian had neglected to fill in on his rather enterprising plans for their future.
Though happily married once, Lady Veronica Smithson is now a self-assured, knowledgeable, and completely independent woman who has no interest in starting any relationship with a man that would result in marriage, and all the ties that venerable institution entails. After some contemplation of her position in society and her personal desires, Veronica believes becoming the mistress ~ discreetly, of course ~ of some debonair gentleman would be much more suitable to her plans of retaining her freedom and control of all her financial affairs. And she has just the dashing gentleman in mind; the well-known adventurer, author, and strikingly attractive ladies' man, Sir Sebastian Hadley-Attwater. Veronica is most certain he'll be agreeable to her mutually beneficial arrangement.
Well, everyone knows ~ "If you want to make God laugh, tell him about your plans."
However, when a magical time of year called Christmas, a little bit of luck, and a crazy little thing called "LOVE" become involved--anything can happen.

Victoria Alexander's begins her latest Victorian era series called Sinful Family Secrets, which focuses on the proper and respectable Hadley-Attwater family, with a delightful bang. Her newest book, His Mistress By Christmas is a story that resonates with all the spirit and sparkle and energy of the holiday season while highlighting all the meaningful reasons we celebrate, the traditions we value, and the importance of family and all the people we love, and who love us, to our lives... and the resulting tale is heartwarming and wonderful.
Ms. Alexander has a remarkable gift for lighthearted, romantic storytelling and in this story her love of Christmas and all its traditions shines through. In HMBC she takes her readers on a truly merry journey at that `most wonderful time of the year' and her story sparkles ever so brightly as she displays her inimitable voice and style, and all of her distinctive trademarks to their best advantage ~ giving readers a well-paced story with a thoroughly engaging plot, thought-provoking and vibrant prose, an abundance of clever, intelligent dialogue and banter, two well-defined and genuinely likable lead characters, and a fascinating and colorful cast of supporting characters all neatly wrapped together and superbly blended with her utterly delightful sense of humor.
I absolutely loved everything about this story. I so enjoyed all the amusing mishaps, twists, and surprising developments as guests kept turning up at Sebastian's door causing some not-so-secret-secrets and little fibs to pile up as well, at what was meant to be Sebastian and Veronica's private ~ and intimate ~ Christmas celebration. Because it turns out, Sebastian wants more than a temporary seduction or affaire; and he's sure all he needs is a little alone time to convince Veronica that he won't take away her independence, that he loves her just the way she is and wants to cherish her forever. And though Veronica's not sure she's ready to risk her freedom ~ or her heart ~ on Sebastian and his marriage proposal, she thinks a little convincing of a sensual nature couldn't hurt. She's more than willing to accept the promise of some deliciously passionate kisses and a few passion filled nights with the endearing man.
His Mistress By Christmas is such a marvelously fun, sexy and romantic Christmas tale that it will surely cause readers to smile and laugh and sigh happily in pleasure and satisfaction, as I did. And it will likely inspire them to create some new Christmas traditions of their own, which will undoubtedly go on to become happy memories for them and their families in the years to come.
A great holiday or ANY time read, highly recommended!

And this book is full of delightful little twists like that. I loved it. I just adore the sophisticated urbane characters Victoria Alexander so skillfully creates.
The twists in this book are utterly delightful. LOVE this whole family. I'm still smiling. If you like Victoria Alexander, you'll like this book. She does frothy, feel-good romances so very, very well.
... can spending time together during the Christmas holidays help them reach a compromise? He hopes not, because he’d rather she give him more than her body; he wants her heart and soul because she’s stolen his!
Such a fun historical romance! No angst, no contrived drama… just a feel good, delightful holiday tale!
I love the humor in Victoria Alexander 's books. She is great at writing misunderstandings and the little one-line quips by her characters.
This was a fun read. A little different than some others, but we all know how it ends. ) I may be a little addicted to historical romance, so this fit the bill. I've read a lot of Mary Balogh, and I would say that Victoria Alexander is becoming a new favorite.
I first read "His Mistress By Christmas" in December of 2011. Since I love to read Christmas novels at this time of year I recently brought it out and read it again. And once again found myself laughing out loud at the circumstances these very likeable characters find themselves in. One of the "Sinful Family Secrets" series by Victoria Alexander (all of which are wonderful reads) this novel has a thoroughly modern heroine and a great cast of supporting characters as well as a completely perfect hero. Lady Veronica is a woman who knows what she wants and intends to get it. She doesn't intend for things to get so hilariously out of hand, however. This is a wonderful story with a completely satisfactory ending and one that I will more than likely be re-reading again next Christmas. I definitely recommend it - "His Mistress by Christmas" will take your mind off of all the hustle bustle that you are supposed to be coping with (instead of sitting around reading a romance novel, haha).
Have you ever gotten yourself into a pickle without really realizing how far into the pickle you have sunk? And then, oops, there you are and there is no way to gracefully back peddle? Well, that is what happens to Sebastian and Veronica in this delightful romp. It could easily have been staged at any time of the year, but the fact that it was in the Holidays just makes it more fun. The deeper the situation develops the harder it is to fix and the more you will laugh out loud. Actually, I saw a great deal of my family in the story, especially the well-meaning relatives who think they are "only trying to help!" This is one of Ms. Alexander's best. I kept sneaking off to read just one more chapter. (You will, too.)
